“Zechariah’s Song: A Song of New Beginnings because of Grace” (Luke 1:67-75)

December 21, 2025

Book: Luke

Message Overview

Zechariah’s song is born out of a second chance, and it announces what God has done in Jesus: He has “visited and redeemed his people,” raised “a horn of salvation,” promised mercy, and brought the Sunrise from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness. It is a song that invites every searching heart to look beyond what Christmas used to be—and to find the deeper beauty of Christmas: the eternal hope found in the Christ of Christmas.

Outline

  1. A Song of New Beginnings because of Grace
    (Luke 1:67–75)

    • A song born out of silence: Zechariah’s journey toward faith “begins with silence,” and “out of that silence… God gives him time to listen.”
    • A song born out of a second chance: “disbelief gave way to faith,” and his first words are praise—“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel…”
  2. A Song of Blessing for Sinners
    (Luke 1:68–75)

    • God has “visited and redeemed his people” (v. 68) — Jesus is Emmanuel and Savior: “The Lord Saves.”
    • God has raised “a horn of salvation” (v. 69) — “we have no muscle to save ourselves… but Jesus… alone has the muscle to save us.”
    • God shows mercy and keeps covenant (vv. 72–73) — “thank God… He is merciful and… always keeps his promises.”
    • God delivers so we “might serve him without fear” (vv. 74–75) — grace removes fear of wrath and humbles us before Him.
  3. A Song of Hope for All Who Believe
    (Luke 1:76–79)

    • Hope announced: John “will be called the prophet of the Most High… to prepare his ways” (v. 76) and “to give knowledge of salvation… in the forgiveness of their sins” (v. 77).
    • Hope dawning: “because of the tender mercy of our God… the sunrise shall visit us from on high” (v. 78) “to give light… and to guide our feet into the way of peace” (v. 79).

Big Idea

The true song of Christmas is a song of new beginnings: because of the tender mercy of our God, Jesus has visited and redeemed sinners, and His Sunrise gives light, forgiveness, and peace to all who believe.
