Two Responses to Sinful Strongholds: Compromising Complainers or Bold Believers (Joshua 16-17)

May 25, 2025

Book: Joshua

Message Overview

Joshua 16–17 gives us a vivid warning and a hopeful contrast as God’s people begin occupying the Promised Land. Even though God had already provided victory, Ephraim and Manasseh tolerated enemy strongholds, settled for compromise, leaned on self-reliance, and then complained for more blessings while leaving sin in place. Yet in the same section, the daughters of Zelophehad model bold faith—appealing to God’s promise, trusting His word, and receiving grace upon grace. The picture is clear for believers today: we can respond to sinful strongholds as compromising complainers, or as bold believers who cling to God’s promises and step forward in obedient faith.

Outline

  1. The Consequence of Compromising Complainers (The Sons of Joseph) (Josh. 16:1–10; 17:7–18)
    1. Tolerating Sin because of Compromise (Josh. 16:1–10)
    2. Resigning to Sin because of Self-Reliance (Josh. 17:7–13; 15:63)
    3. Excusing Sin & Complaining (Josh. 17:14–18)
  2. The Blessing of Bold Believers(The Daughters of Zelophehad)(Josh. 17:1–6)

Big Idea

God has provided everything we need to drive out sinful strongholds, but we must not settle for compromise, self-reliance, or complaint; instead, like bold believers, we cling to God’s promises, step forward in obedient faith, and trust Him for grace-filled victory.
