Book: Acts

Message Overview

In Acts 1:12–26, we learn how Christ’s church discerns the King’s will when real decisions must be made.
The first acts of the early church were simple but decisive: obedience to Jesus’ direction, unity in prayer,
Scripture at the center, and leaders who act with a clear eye on gospel mission. As they face the painful vacancy
left by Judas, the church models a decision-making pathway that still serves us today—turning first to God’s Word,
weighing the gospel implications, doing the work, bathing everything in prayer, and then making a decision in
dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Outline

Decision-Making in the Church: Discerning the King’s Will
(Acts 1:13–26)

    1. They faced the problem honestly: a painful leadership vacancy
      (Acts 1:13–20; Matt. 27:3–5)
    2. They went first to Scripture (revealed will guiding unknowns)
      (Acts 1:20)
    3. They considered gospel implications and future faithfulness
      (Matt. 19; Acts 1:8 framework)

      1. Twelve apostles mattered for Scripture fulfillment
      2. Twelve mattered in their Jewish witness and kingdom categories
    4. They acted: leaders must labor and not be paralyzed
      (Acts 1:21–23)
    5. They prayed: enthroning the ascended Christ in the decision
      (Acts 1:24–25)
    6. They made the decision in dependence on God’s leading
      (Acts 1:26)

      1. Casting lots fit their moment before Pentecost
      2. Today we depend on the indwelling Holy Spirit rather than lots

Big Idea

When Christ’s church faces weighty decisions, the first pathway is clear:
obey Jesus, devote ourselves to prayer, be guided by Scripture, consider gospel implications,
do the necessary work, and then decide in dependence on the Holy Spirit—so Jesus is honored
as the reigning King in His church and in our homes.
