Book: Joshua

Message Overview

Joshua 24 closes the book of Joshua not with a quiet ending, but with a covenant decision: God’s people must choose whom they will serve. Joshua begins by calling Israel to remember their salvation story: Jehovah’s grace, power, and faithfulness from Abraham to Egypt to the Promised Land. Why? because remembering fuels present-day obedience. Then, on the basis of God’s proven faithfulness, Joshua presses the people to continue in sincere, undivided service, putting away every rival idol and renewing their commitment to the Lord.

And for every believer who feels the weight of that call (and the reality of our failures), the passage ultimately points beyond Joshua to the greater Joshua—Jesus—whose perfect faithfulness secures our salvation and whose Spirit enables our willful dependence for lifelong faithfulness.

Outline

  1. REMEMBER: Who Our God Is & What He Has Done! (Joshua 24:1–13)
    (Never get over His grace)
  2. CONTINUE (Joshua 24:14–33)
    1. The Choice to CONTINUE: Love God & Reject All Rivals! (Joshua 24:14–24)
(We cannot serve two masters—the heart must be undivided.)
    2. The Strength to CONTINUE: Willful Dependence Fuels Lifelong Faithfulness (Joshua 24:25–33)
(Our Redeemer’s faithfulness enables our faithfulness.)

Big Idea

Because the Lord has been relentlessly faithful to save and sustain His people, we must choose to serve Him with an undivided heart—putting away every rival—and continue in willful dependence on the greater Joshua, Jesus, whose faithfulness enables our lifelong faithfulness.
