Book: Joshua

Message Overview

Joshua 4 confronts our modern impulse to always chase the “next thing”—in culture, in church, and in daily life. God interrupts Israel at a critical moment of forward momentum and says, in effect: Stop. Remember. They have finally crossed the Jordan—after forty years of wilderness wandering and centuries of promise—and yet God commands them to pause and build a memorial. Why? Because remembering is not sentimental; it is spiritual survival. Before Israel continues into the battles ahead (Jericho is already in view), they must establish a reference point that will fuel faith, humility, worship, unity, and testimony for generations.

Joshua 3–4 also points forward. The Jordan crossing is a picture of salvation: God makes a way where there is no way, and His people cross by faith. And the same God who brings us into salvation by grace is the God who sustains us through every “Jordan” we face in life. The call of Joshua 4 is clear for individuals, families, and the church: Remember what God has done—so that you may continue faithfully.

Outline

  1. Remembering Unites God’s People
    (Josh. 4:1–4; 4:11–14)
  2. Remembering is an Act of Obedience
    (Josh. 4:1–8; 4:10)
  3. Remembering is Not Passive
    (Josh. 4:5–9; 4:19–20)
  4. Remembering is For Others
    (Josh. 4:21–24)

    1. For your children: your testimony must be told (v. 21–22)
    2. For the lost: so all peoples may know the Lord (v. 23–24)

Big Idea

God calls His people to remember His saving work—intentionally and continually—so our faith is strengthened, our pride is crushed, our unity is deepened, our testimony is proclaimed, and our continuing obedience is fueled.
