“Possess Your Inheritance” (Joshua 13)

Book: Joshua

Message Overview

Joshua 13 opens a new section of the book: the land is being assigned as Israel’s inheritance, yet the inheritance still must be possessed. The kings and armies have been defeated, and the land is truly a gift from God, but enemy strongholds remain scattered throughout the territory. That creates a danger that feels familiar to every believer: after victory, complacency creeps in. Like Israel, Christians have entered rest because Jesus has secured salvation; and yet, “there remains yet very much land to possess” as we press into Christ, put off the old life, and yield to the Spirit’s sanctifying work. Joshua 13 confronts spiritual laziness and calls us to active faith and obedience—rooted in this promise: the work is ultimately God’s work in and through His people.

Outline

  1. Christian: There is Work to Do (Josh. 13:1)
  2. Christian: This Work requires Faith & Obedience (Josh. 13:2–6a)
  3. Christian: This Work is God’s Work in & through You (Josh. 13:6b–7)

Big Idea

Though Christ has secured our salvation and brought us into rest, there remains work to do: by faith and obedience we press into our inheritance—trusting that God Himself is the One who drives out strongholds and accomplishes His work in and through us.
